Emergency roof-leak guide
During an active roof leak, protect people first, move valuables, contain water from a safe location and keep away from sagging ceilings or electrical hazards. Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof. Site measurements and observed condition should take priority over a general rule of thumb.
Control the interior risk
Shut off power to an affected area only if it can be done safely, place containers beneath drips and relieve a bulging ceiling only through qualified emergency help.
Record what happened
Note when the leak started, weather direction, rooms affected and any safe ground-level or interior photos. This helps the roofer trace a source that may be uphill from the stain.
Temporary is not permanent
Emergency weatherproofing may stop further entry until conditions improve. The roof still needs a full inspection and compatible permanent repair.
