Roofing glossary
Roofing terms describe layers, edges, drainage and transitions. Understanding a few key words makes estimates easier to compare and helps property owners ask precise questions. The decision should also account for flashing: formed material that redirects water at transitions.
Roof layers
Decking is the structural surface; underlayment or membrane provides a secondary water layer; the field covering is the visible shingle, panel or membrane.

Edges and transitions
Eaves are lower edges, rakes are sloped gable edges, valleys collect water and flashing directs water at walls, chimneys, skylights and penetrations.

Low-slope terms
A drain, scupper or gutter removes water; a curb raises equipment or skylights; cover board protects insulation; a seam joins membrane sheets.
